Time-of-Use

What Are Time-of-Use Rates?

Did you know electricity doesn’t cost the same to produce all day long? During certain hours—when most people are using electricity at the same time—demand on the electric system is much higher. That’s why we use Time-of-Use rates. Electricity costs a little more during our busiest hours and less during the rest of the day.

A Time-of-Use rate allows customers to manage their costs by taking advantage of lower costs during off-peak energy use windows. This encourages members to shift their energy usage outside of on-peak energy use windows when power supply costs more.

Do I have to participate in the Time-of-Use rate?

Effective September 8, 2026, for Cycle 1 and September 22, 2026 for Cycle 2, time-of use rates will be the default for all customers. Residential customers who are not on net-metering, may opt-out of time-of-use rates and request standard rates by calling customer service: 435-654-1581.

When Are On-Peak Hours?

Our on-peak hours are simple to remember: 3:00 PM until 10:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The good news? Weekends and recognized holidays are always off-peak!

Example: If you can run your dishwasher, charge your electric vehicle, or do laundry before 3:00 pm or after 10:00 pm, you’ll be using electricity during off-peak hours.

Summer vs Winter Rates

Our Time-of-Use rates change slightly between summer and winter because electricity demand changes throughout the year.

While the on-peak hours stay the same—3 PM to 10 PM on weekdays—the price difference between on-peak and off-peak varies by season.

You can always find the current rates on rates page, but the easiest way to save is simply remembering to shift larger electric use outside of on-peak hours whenever possible.

Easy Ways to Save

Saving money with Time-of-Use rates doesn’t have to be complicated.
Here are five easy changes:

  • ⚡Run your dishwasher after 10pm.
  • ⚡Do laundry before 3pm or later in the evening.
  • ⚡Charge your electric vehicle overnight.
  • ⚡Set programmable appliances to start automatically.
  • ⚡If possible, avoid using several large appliances at the same time during on-peak hours.

Even small changes can make a difference over time!
